Chenjiao Miao
Researcher in Zheng Cao's group at Northeast Agricultural University who studies how environmental and food toxins damage organs in mice, and first author of the 2026 study tying a screen chemical to kidney disease through mTOR
Heilongjiang Key Laboratory for Laboratory Animals and Comparative Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, Northeast Agricultural University, Harbin (papers 2024–2026)
Chenjiao Miao was first author of a 2026 Environmental Science & Technology study (MIAO2026) on EDPrB, a liquid-crystal monomer used in display screens that can escape into the environment. Mice exposed to EDPrB built it up in the kidney and developed chronic kidney disease. The chain of harm started with overactive mTOR, the cell's growth switch. With mTOR stuck on, autophagy, the cell's self-cleaning system, was suppressed, and inflammation and fibrosis, a stiff scar tissue, followed. Rapamycin, which blocks mTOR, prevented the damage, and human kidney cells in a dish responded in the same way.
The paper lays this out as an adverse outcome pathway, a step-by-step map that regulators can use to judge chemical risk. It shows a mechanism in mice and cells; it does not measure harm in exposed people.
Miao works in Zheng Cao's group in Harbin. Earlier first-author work showed in mice and pig gut cells that the grain mycotoxin deoxynivalenol damages the intestinal barrier through the RhoA/ROCK pathway (2024), and a 2026 first-author paper found that the plastic chemical bisphenol F drives kidney inflammation and fibrosis through stress in the endoplasmic reticulum and changes in kidney macrophages.

| Year | Evidence | Study |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | A | Chronic Kidney Disease Risk Posed by 1-Ethoxy-2,3-difluoro-4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl) Benzene (EDPrB): An AOP of mTOR-Mediated Autophagy Dysregulation. MIAO2026 First author: showed in mice and human kidney cells that the pollutant EDPrB causes kidney disease through mTOR overactivation and suppressed autophagy. |
